The Story Behind the Name: How the Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen Got Its Name

Several years ago, Brad and Bre Hansen embarked on a journey that would breathe new life into Eau Claire’s vibrant waterfront scene. Their dream? To create a unique destination where the community could gather, celebrate, and enjoy exceptional craft beverages and food. The result of their vision is The Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen, a name rich in symbolism and deeply connected to the local community.

A Name Rooted in Community and Transformation

Brad and Bre, both avid beer enthusiasts, moved to Eau Claire several years ago from the Appleton area. Bre’s ties to UW-Eau Claire and their shared love for the city made it the perfect place to bring their dream to life. When it came time to choose a name for their new venture, they wanted something that would resonate not only with them but also with the community they cherished.

The inspiration came from Phoenix Park, a beloved local landmark near the new taproom. Phoenix Park itself is a symbol of transformation and renewal. What was once a brown space has been revitalized into a beautiful park, a green oasis that brings joy and recreation to residents and visitors alike. This transformation mirrored what Brad and Bre envisioned for their project.

The Symbolism of the Phoenix

For Brad and Bre, the symbolism of the phoenix went beyond just the local park. The phoenix, a mythical bird that rises from its ashes, represents rebirth, renewal, and new beginnings. This symbolism was profoundly meaningful to the Hansens as they embarked on this new venture together.

They saw the transformation of the old Graham Riverside building’s first floor, previously a bank, into The Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen as a metaphorical rising from the ashes. Just as the phoenix symbolizes a fresh start and a new chapter, so did this project for Brad and Bre. It was an opportunity to breathe new life into a historic space, turning it into a riverside taproom and kitchen oasis that the community could enjoy.

Bringing The Phoenix to Life

The journey from concept to creation was fueled by passion, dedication, and a deep sense of purpose. Brad and Bre poured their hearts into every detail, from selecting the perfect location in the Graham Riverside building to designing the 4,200-square-foot space to include 72 taps featuring a diverse selection of craft beers, ciders, seltzers, kombucha, wines, and cocktails.

Their commitment to quality and community is evident in every aspect of The Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen. The full-scale kitchen offers elevated tapas, and the self-pour tap wall powered by the iPourIt system provides a seamless and interactive way for patrons to explore the extensive beverage menu.

A New Chapter for Eau Claire

As The Phoenix Taproom & Kitchen prepares for its grand opening week, beginning July 1, Brad and Bre Hansen reflect on their journey with gratitude and excitement. The name "The Phoenix" not only honors the spirit of renewal and transformation but also celebrates the vibrant community of Eau Claire that has supported them every step of the way.
